Have you seen the new Sport England This Girl Can ad campaign? Does the Missy beats get you jigging too? I am loving the sight of real women working out or doing sports at the 100% level. By that I mean they’re giving all they’ve got and not worried about how they look. It just makes me wanna ‘get my freak on’ and head to a Zumba class because This Girl Can! So why have I entitled this blog Supergirl when I talking about the Sport England ad. Well, the ad’s slogan “This Girl Can’ takes me back to one of my favourite childhood movies; Supergirl.
Supergirl the movie was a complete flopat the bix office and git appalling reviews but my sister and I just loved it. The ‘This Girl Can’ slogan is empowering and seeing the ad reminds of the end of the movie when Supergirl seems beaten. She’s ready to give up telling herself ‘I can’t’ and then she hears Zaltar’s booming voice reminding her ‘YOOU CAN’. So up and out she flies to overcome her enemy. I haven’t watched iy in years, honestly, but can still picture it. I think it was ability to overcome once she believed and recognised that she could do it, which appealed to me then and still does now. Who we’re surrounded by and what we hear is so important. Our greatest critic is usually us. The reason we are probably scared to try something new is because we’ve told ourself we can’t. That’s when an ad campaign like This Girl Can comes along to challenge that nonsensical voice within. That’s when we need our very own ‘Zaltar’, someone in our life to tell us ‘YOU CAN’. Lucy Mangan from Stylist also wrote about the This Girl Can campaign ad and it’s effect recently. She was encouraging us to silence that negative internal voice and I completely agree. Be free.
Whether you’re inspired by Supergirl like I was, or it’s the This Girl Can ad campaign it’s important to remember, ultimately what we believe about ourselves is our choice. We can choose to agree or disagree that we can. The reality it’s our choice. Whether you have been fortunate like Supergirl and have soneone to believe in you and remind you of that when you need it most or not. Know this ‘YOU CAN!’ Point to yourself and say ‘This Girl Can’ then get to it. Why? Because ‘YOU CAN!’ (That’s right, call me Zaltar 😉
Until next time.
